The name Cockburn derives from a location
in Berwichshire, near Duns. The Cockburns were first mentioned
as vassals of the Earls of March, but the 14th century brought
about an improvement of fortune when the Barony of Carriden was
bestowed on Sir Alexander de Cockburn by David II.
Later family members also appear in history as one was the keeper
of the Great Seal of Scotland. More famously, Admiral Cockburn
conveyed Napoleon to his exile on St Helena and the Cockburns
supported Mary,
Queen of Scots, and their castle at Skirling was demolished as
a result.
The most distinguished figure was Henry Cockburn, the Whig politician
and judge who rose to the post of Solicitor General in 1830 and
played a leading part in drafting the Scottish Reform Bill. He
had his home at Bonaly Tower, Colinton on the outskirts of the
Capital.
